Brief Biography
Ian is Director of Science for the Asia Pacific Region of The Nature Conservancy - in that role, he provides scientific leadership and support to terrestrial, freshwater and marine conservation programs throughout the region. He was previously Director of the Conservancy’s Conservation Measures and Audit program and is also a Director of the TNC Australia Ltd. He joined the Conservancy in 2001 as the Indonesia Country Program Director.

Prior to joining TNC, Ian was the Asia Coordinator of the Coastal Resources Center of the University of Rhode Island, based in Indonesia. Between 1987-1995 he was Senior Lecturer in Planning in the School of Applied Science at the University of New England (now Southern Cross University) where he taught natural resources planning and management and led projects throughout the Asia-Pacific region. From 1984-87 he was Senior Park Management Officer with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and from 1981-83 worked with Kinhill consultants on environmental assessment of mining, water resources and coastal development projects. Between 1979-81 he worked with the Australian Federal government on soil and water conservation programs.

Ian was awarded a Matsumae Fellowship in 1990 and undertook his research at Nihon University. He has also received several engineering and science awards for innovation. He serves on a range of TNC and global advisory committees, including the Pacific Congress on Marine Science and Technology and the Biodiversity Committee of the Global Reporting Initiative.
